The possible effects of social media on the younger generations is a topic that is discussed frequently. Seeing as those effects have been shown to vary from person to person, it only seems appropriate to speak on my own personal experiences as a former teenager growing up in the digital age.
recently read a few chapters from The Stupidity Epidemic: Worrying about Students, Schools, and America’s Future about the intellectual state of the younger generations. Now, just based on the title, I was expecting the same discourse about how technology is frying the minds of our youth and how we don’t care about the important things in life like cooking and taxes.
In my Digital Media Literacy class, we were told to engage in a very thought-provoking debate on whether or not selfies are narcissistic or empowering for our generation. Although I personally never formed an opinion on the matter beforehand, it did force me to reconsider what it even meant to be narcissistic in the first place.
